Sunday February 5, 2012

Sunday School:   9:00 a.m. for nursery through adult

Worship Service:  10:15 a.m.

Theme:   But I Tell You

Scripture:   Matthew 5: 38-48

You have heard that it was said, "Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth."  But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person.  If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.  And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said, "Love your neighbor and hate your enemy."  But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.  He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?  Are not even the tax collections doing that?  And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?  Do not even pagans do that?  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Background:   This Sunday we will continue our series in the Sermon on the Mount.  Jesus is going below the surface of the common understandings people had of God and duty to God. He was discarding traditional thought.  He was casting aside distortion and the teaching of the religious leaders to get at the heart of God.  He will ask us to give up some rights:  the right to revenge and the right to put limits on our love.  God never did give us the right to either.  But somehow it has crept into our culture, our churches, and our lives that we have these rights.  Jesus has a lot to say about this.  It may not be what you want or what we expect.

This is Communion Sunday.  On these Sundays we ask that you consider making a food and/or monetary donation to Reach Out Lakota, a local food and clothing pantry that is supported by many area churches.  Food donations can be left in the large bin by the front entrance.  Monetary donations can be placed in the offering plate.

Don’t forget Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. for nursery through adult classes.

See you Sunday!
